NWFSC Academic TutoringA word of warning before you head off to attend your first NWFSC session - make sure you have done your homework. There are numerous programs out there that will do a good job of teaching you the concepts of literary theory, but even when they are well-written, they will not be teaching you how to comprehend and express the ideas of the author. This will not only deprive you of the ultimate understanding of your reading material, but will also deprive you of the feeling of reading fluently. By being taught the terminology, form, and form of literary material, a student will have a better opportunity of developing their own style of reading.To prepare yourself for NWFSC, there are a number of questions you will need to ask. First and foremost, how much time do you have available? The NWFSC class times are strict; they last for a full night and a half. You should be prepared to spend the majority of your time there.When you come to Northwest Florida State College (NWFSC) for your NWFSC classes, make certain you check your schedule. Depending on what class you are in, you may not have an entire night. You can seek out a student who is in your same class in order to discuss the time you will be sharing. However, you should check your individual schedules to see what the length of time you will be sharing will be. In some cases, the instructor may be flexible in letting you spend just a few hours or even a few minutes in class, but be aware that you will be sharing a large amount of time with him or her.The NWFSC syllabus is long and complicated. It is made up of four sections. They are the CCL (Classical Literature) syllabus, the Creative Writing syllabus, the Reading Literature syllabus, and the Writing Ethics syllabus. Most students are required to complete a WLM (Writing Master Plan). This course outlines in greater detail what you will be expected to do during the class. It should be included with the syllabus, and in the syllabus it shou ld be a heading with the syllabus numbers followed by the entire course title and the syllabus heading.Another way to learn how to apply the principles of literary analysis to the characters and the plot of your work is through academic tutoring. This can be accomplished with various methods. The most traditional is your teacher or a librarian taking the class, bringing the materials to class, and assisting you throughout the class. This is the easiest method, and as long as you have enough time for it, you should be able to do it. However, this type of academic tutoring will not be as complete as a teacher-guided class would be.Another option is to be the writer. You may write your own literary works in the style of the characters in the class. This will allow you to spend the time working on the characters and working on the plot. To have this option, you will need to have an idea of how to write in the style of the characters, the setting, and the genre. If you are not confident in your ability to do this, consider being the writer and having someone else write it for you. This option is the best and is the most prestigious option but is not as traditional as a teacher-guided class.The first few weeks of NWFSC are your opportunity to study and learn the theories of the literary craft. The rest of the time, the only time you should be dealing with the techniques of writing is to check your work and go back to the writing manual to check the way you are doing. Each class is different, so each student should be able to find an approach to it that is appropriate for them.
